MISS KLEIBACKER: NEW YORK DESIGNER TO OHIO CURATOR
The Ohio Arts Council’s Riffe Gallery presents
Kleibacker: New York Designer to Ohio Curator from May 8 –
July 6, 2008. A retrospective of curatorial and design
work by nationally recognized fashion icon Charles Kleibacker,
this exhibition brings together original garments,
photography, illustration and memorabilia to examine
Kleibacker’s long career and his contribution to the worlds of
clothing design and fine art.
The Ohio Arts Council’s Riffe Gallery is located in the
Vern Riffe Center for Government and the Arts, 77 S. High St.,
Columbus, OH. Admission is free. Gallery hours are Tuesday, 10
a.m.-4 p.m., Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 10 a.m.-8 p.m.,
Saturday 12-8 p.m. and Sunday 12-4 p.m. The gallery is closed

2008 GOVERNOR'S AWARDS FOR THE
ARTS IN OHIO AND ARTS DAY LUNCHEON A
SUCCESS! |
Governor Ted Strickland and First Lady Frances
Strickland attended the 2008 Governor’s Awards for the
Arts in Ohio and Arts Day Luncheon on Wednesday, April
16. The governor presented the welcome address at the
luncheon hosted by the Ohio Arts Council and Ohio
Citizens for the Arts Foundation. The event was
presented at the Columbus Athenaeum in downtown Columbus
to a sold out crowd of nearly 850 people. Senate
President Bill Harris and Speaker of the House Jon
Husted presented the awards to each of the 2008
Governor’s Awards recipients.
Award categories and recipients include: Arts
Administration, Marcie Goodman, Cleveland International
Film Festival (Cleveland); Arts in Education, Michael
Huffman, Lima City Schools (Lima); Arts Patron, Susan
Reams (Perrysburg); Business Support of the Arts,
Limited Brands (Columbus); Community Development and
Participation, Dr. Catherine Roma, MUSE, Cincinnati’s
Women’s Choir, Umoja Men’s Chorus and Voices of Freedom
Choir (Cincinnati); and Individual Artists, Dr. Burton
Beerman, composer/musician (Bowling Green) and Steve
Free, singer/songwriter (McDermott). Winners received an
original work of art by Ohio painter Betsy DeFusco.
The 2008 Governor’s Awards ceremony and luncheon was
held in conjunction with Arts Day. This daylong event
demonstrating public value and support for the arts was
sponsored by Ohio Citizens for the Arts Foundation. Arts
Day included an arts advocacy briefing, legislative
visits and student exhibitions.
The 2008 Governor’s Awards for the Arts in Ohio and
Arts Day Luncheon were made possible by The National
Endowment for the Arts and Ohio Government
Telecommunications. Media sponsors include Cincinnati
Enquirer, The Columbus Dispatch, Dayton Daily News, Ohio

Barbara Robinson
Voted one of Ohio’s Most Influential People by
Cleveland Magazine
Former Ohio Arts Council Board Chair Barbara
Robinson has been voted one of Ohio’s Most
Influential People by Cleveland Magazine:
The arts and the name Barbara Robinson
are synonymous. The former chair of the Ohio
Arts Council and the National Assembly of State
Arts Agencies, where she coordinated lobbying
that helped save the National Endowment for the
Arts, is a force on the region’s cultural scene.
Aside from being one of the classiest people
you’ll ever meet, she’s as generous with her
time as she is with her influence.
Huron’s First Poet Laureate
Huron City Council recently established the
position of poet laureate and tapped Larry
Smith. He is professor emeritus at BGSU
Firelands and the founder and director of Bottom
Dog Press as well as an author and poet.
"My goal is to make poetry a public matter,
to talk in the schools, write a column for the
local newspaper and promote public readings at
the Huron amphitheater this summer, said Larry
Smith, "It's good to be the poet laureate."
Larry Smith is the author of eight books of
poetry, three books of fiction, two literary
biographies on Kenneth Patchen and Lawrence
Ferlinghetti, and co-produced three
documentaries on Kenneth Patchen, James Wright,
and d.a.levy.
Akron Art Museum Names New Curator of
Exhibitions
The Akron Art Museum named Ellen Rudolph
Curator of Exhibitions. Rudolph will coordinate
the museum’s traveling exhibition schedule and
originate new exhibitions for the museum. She
received her Master of Arts degree from Case
Western Reserve University and was formerly the
Assistant Curator of the Progressive
Corporation’s art collection. In addition, she
worked as an independent curator and manager of
private collections in the Cleveland area for
four years and worked at Sotheby’s in New York

National Endowment for the Arts Announces NEA
Jazz Masters Live: Two Ohio Organizations Chosen
Jazz Arts Group of Columbus and Tri-C JazzFest of Cleveland
will take part in the National Endowment for the Art’s NEA
Jazz Masters on Tour Initiative. The Initiative will bring
more than 25 NEA Jazz Masters to 12 venues across nine states,
including the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in
Washington, D.C. and the American Jazz Museum in Kansas City,
Missouri.
From 2005-2007, NEA Jazz Masters on Tour reached an
audience of more than 165,000 in all 50 states, plus the
District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and gave 27
NEA Jazz Masters the chance to reach new audiences. NEA Jazz
Masters Live provides more in-depth opportunities for NEA Jazz
Masters to share their contributions to the art of jazz
through performances, master classes, clinics, lectures or
other types of presentations, many of which last several days.
Cincinnati Shakespeare Receives National Endowment
for the Arts Grant
Cincinnati Shakespeare is one of 40 nonprofit, professional
theater companies to receive grants from the National
Endowment for the Arts to participate in Shakespeare for a New
Generation from June 1, 2008 – May 31, 2009. The project
targets middle and high school students to introduce young
people to the power of live theater and the masterpieces of
William Shakespeare.
The program is in its fifth year with more than one million
students served. Each of the participating companies will
present production of selected Shakespeare plays with
accompanying educational activities to at least 10 schools in

SESSION FOR LEADERS OF CULTURALLY DIVERSE ARTS
ORGANIZATIONS |
The Office of Organizational
Service and Community Development at the Ohio Arts
Council will host a Grant Information and Networking
Session for Leaders of Culturally Diverse Arts
Organizations on Wednesday, June 11, 2008, at the
Columbus Museum of Art. The Session will provide an
overview of the OAC’s Building Cultural Diversity
Initiative grant program, the Online Grants Application
(OLGA) system and successful grant writing tips.
Participants will also have the opportunity to network
and to participate in a facilitated discussion about
their common challenges, needs and opportunities. The
Session will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with
registration beginning at 10:00 a.m. A small
registration fee covers coffee, lunch, snacks and
session materials. Parking is free. Participants will
receive a stipend to help offset the cost of attending.
